SE/EU: Sweden joins epSOS pilot facilitating cross-border ePrescriptions

As of 28 October 2013, a pilot operation of the epSOS project enables ePrescriptions from other European countries to be picked up at epSOS-approved pharmacies in Sweden, and for Swedish ePrescriptions to be collected at epSOS-approved pharmacies in other countries.

Tourists and visitors to Sweden can now pick up their foreign ePrescriptions at the NK Pharmacy in Stockholm, the Aspen Pharmacy in Haparanda, the Black Fox pharmacy in Övertorneå and the Emporia pharmacy in Malmö.

European patients Smart Open Services (epSOS) is a European project that was created to allow information to follow the patient throughout the EU, thus making it easier for those who move across borders to get the same quality healthcare in all Member States. The project focuses on the development and pilot operation of cross-border health services (patient summary and electronic prescription) aiming at the safety and security of patient in another Member State.

epSOS is high on the political agenda in all 28 EU Member States. The project brings together 25 European countries acting for high quality eHealth. These are: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and.the UK.

In May 2012, the project started a pilot operation consisting of the epSOS patient overview, which was made available for residents and caregivers in Austria, France, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. epSOS services for ePrescriptions can now be used in selected pharmacies in Greece and soon in Denmark. More countries are planned to join the pilot operation by the end of 2013. Information about pharmacies that participate in the pilot can be found online on the epSOS website.
