HU: City of Miskolc to move to vendor-independent desktop

The administration of the Hungarian city of Miskolc is moving to a desktop system based on open source, in order to become less dependent on a single proprietary IT vendor and to reduce costs for its desktop PCs. Already 60 percent of the civil servants use Open Office and Libre Office, two closely related open source suites of office tools.

The administration of the Hungarian city of Miskolc is moving to a desktop system based on open source, in order to become less dependent on a single proprietary IT vendor and to reduce costs for its desktop PCs. Already 60 percent of the civil servants use Open Office and Libre Office, two closely related open source suites of office tools.

The city next wants to replace its proprietary PC operating systems by moving to Ubuntu GNU/Linux, says Peter Szakal, a consultant at Open SKM, an open source IT service provider that is assisting the public administration with its migration.

Almost all of the 25,000 workers at thirteen hospitals in the Copenhagen region will over the next year begin to use Libre Office, an open source suite of office productivity tools. The group of hospitals is phasing out a proprietary alternative, 'for long term strategic reasons', which at the same time saves the group some 40 million Kroner (about 5.3 million euro) worth of proprietary licences.

Public administrations that actively use open source, should maintain good contacts with those developing that kind of software, recommends Florian Maier, software developer working for the city of Munich. Such contacts offer good opportunities for the exchange of knowledge, he says. "The community is very important. Public administrations do not have to do software development work alone."
