    Privacy has come under pressure in Europe in recent years. More and more surveillance and an increase in electronic registration of personal information, means a heightened risk of misuse and to a certain extent the possibility of profiling citizens. However the privacy challenge can be dealt with by making use of modern technology and by complying with a strict interpretation of the European law in the field. The recent development and a number of proposed solutions will be the main themes in the European Privacy Conference being held in Copenhagen the 23 – 24 September.

    The Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime, which entered into force in July 2004, lays down guidelines for all governments wishing to develop legislation against cybercrime.

    It is open to signature by non-European states and provides a framework for international co-operation in this field.
