The German city of Munich refutes the claims over high costs of the city's switch to an IT system mostly based on open source. The IT department takes apart the numbers published by Focus earlier this week. The German weekly questions the city's move to open source, citing the author of an unpublished report commissioned by the maker of the ubiquitous proprietary office software and operating system.

Kuntien Tiera, shared IT service provider founded two years ago by Finnish cities and municipalities, is basing a majority of its online services on free and open source software. "It is a very important step for us", comments Kari Syrjärinne, business area manager at Kuntien Tiera.
The two firms announced their agreement earlier this month.

In partnership with Novateca, the Global Libraries programme in Moldova, and IREX, IFLA has launched a new Building Strong Library Associations programme country project in Moldova. The project started in November 2012, and will continue until November 2013.
The IFLA Literacy and Reading and Information Literacy Sections are seeking proposals for its programme, Intergenerational Literacies, to be held at the IFLA Conference in Singapore in August 2013. The deadline for proposals has been extended to February 24, 2013.

The widespread use by the Greek government of the ubiquitous proprietary office suite is hindering public administrations that want to use open source, says George Georgiadis, head of IT at the Greek municipality of Kalamarià. The municipality is one of the few that implement the free and open source office suite Libre Office.

The Norwegian free software association for municipalities, Friprogforeningen, is starting to offer cloud-based open source applications. This means municipalities can use open source tools such as the Redmine project management and bug-tracking tool and the OTRS service management and helpdesk software, without having to install and maintain the applications. The cloud itself is running free and open source software.

Developers and project managers involved in open source software projects for public libraries in Denmark, France, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic last Friday took a first step to learn more about each other's work. Meeting in a Google Hangout, they introduced their open source software projects, aiming to get ideas for future developments.
