The government of Hungary is creating a resource centre to help the country's public administrations implement free and open source software and open standards. One of the main goals of the centre is to make public administrations aware of the free and open source alternatives to proprietary ICT solutions.
The competence centre, Szabad Szoftver Kompetencia Központ, is to provide continuity, make information available in Hungarian and help public administrations find fixes for any problem they might encounter.
A conference on biometrics, identification microchips and smart cards earlier this month awarded the Smart Open Service for European Patients project. This is one of the EU's Large Scale Pilots. In January, Epsos made available a first completely open source reference implementation. The software is hosted on Joinup.

The new organisation is called Linked Organisation of Local Authority ICT Societies (LOLA). It is the international version of national networks of local administrations in Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands and Belgium.

The IFLA Governing Board bestows Honours and Awards to recognise individuals contributing to IFLA and the international library and information services sector. All authorized representatives of Members and Personal Affiliates are eligible to make nominations.

Croatia's President Ivo Josipovic is providing support to a conference organised by two free and open source advocacy groups, the Croatian Linux User Group (Hrvatska Udruga Linux Korisnika, HULK) and the Croation Association for Open Systems (HrOpen). The president accepted the groups' invitation to become the conference honorary patron.

A report on the use of free software and open standards by the European Parliament is being written, says Alexander Alvaro, Vice-President of the European Parliament. "The first steps were made and preliminary information was presented to some of the Members of the EP." The report was requested last year, in an amendment to the discharge of the EP's 2010 budget.

In February 2013, the Minister of Information Society and Administration, Mr Ivo Ivanovski, announced the launch of a project called the ‘Introduction of a system for tracking the status of a document through the use of mobile technologies’. Its aim is to improve efficiency and ensure greater transparency in public administration.
