U.S. Committee on House Administration Calls on Government Printing Office to Maintain Free Access to Congressional Documents

The House Administration Chairman Candice Miller, and Ranking Member Robert Brady,  issued the a statement after the full Committee sent a letter to the Acting Public Printer of the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) rejecting a recent recommendation by the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) to charge the public for access to GPO’s congressional documents:

2013 Legislative Data Standards Conference

The U.S. House of Representatives held its second annual Legislative Data and Transparency Conference on 22 May, in the Capitol Visitor Center Auditorium. The 2012 conference brought together the government insiders that create and publish legislative data with the public that consumes and reuses the information. The 2013 conference addressed the "use and future of legislative data," and covered topics including electronic legislative archiving, XML and metadata standards, and updates on beta.congress.gov. 

IPU Members Back Democratic Governance as a Post-2015 Development Goal

The 24th IPU Bulletin reports that the results from a survey carried out during the 128th IPU Assembly in Quito have revealed that 80 per cent of MPs back democratic governance as a stand-alone objective for the United Nations Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Nearly all (96 per cent) of the 240 MPs surveyed from 619 MPs present in Quito, believed that the key elements of democratic governance – participation, transparency and accountability – should be embedded into the other SDGs to ensure their success.

The open parliament in the age of the internet: can the people now collaborate with legislatures in lawmaking?

The book, published by the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil, is based on a study of two particular cases where parliamentary bodies designed and implemented participatory digital processes, namely, the e-Democracy Program developed by the Brazilian House of Representatives, and the Virtual Senator Program developed by the Chilean Senate.

The University of Hull published 3 guides aimed at practitioners on the use of websites and social media by parliaments, drawing from the research developed for the project Managing Parliament’s Image. The Senate of Italy publishes all bills in XML Akoma Ntoso

Since 23 February 2013 the Senate of Italy started to publish on its website all bills in XML, using an Akoma Ntoso compliant scheme (in addition to the usual HTML, PDF, and ePub formats). Also, the Senate of Italy recently released the open data portal dati.senato.it
