Public administrations in Italy's Lazio region are encouraged to replace proprietary software with open source alternatives, according to the relevant article of the new law on open data adopted on 23 May 2012. The law also foresees that all software developed for and by the regions’ public organisations should be made available as open source.

Coinciding with the review process of the European Directive on the Reuse of Public Sector Information, the Spanish Open Data Community has recently launched a campaign for a common European Open Data License in the European Union, open for support to all EU citizens.
