An original computer application that enables access to electronic patient records (EPRs) instantly via doctors' smartphones has been designed by the IT team of a Medical Centre in Teaneck, New Jersey, USA. The application also offers direct phone links to a patient's nurse and emergency contact person via smartphone and other mobile devices.

After nearly a year running as a pilot trial, an open source (OS) electronic patient record (EPR) system is due to be rolled out more widely at London's Moorfields Eye Hospital in November 2011.
